Francis, the Soccer-Loving Pope
Jorge Bergoglio had a deep connection with soccer, rooted in his childhood in Buenos Aires. He was a professed fan and member of Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro, and for some seasons, he even entered the locker room to pray with the first-team players before matches.
Even as Pope Francis, he marked a milestone in recent history for his profound influence on humanity. His constant call for mercy and inclusion has resonated globally, promoting fraternal dialogue between religions and cultures. His firm stance in defense of the most vulnerable and marginalized, affirming the rights of transgender people, homosexuals, refugees, and migrants, as well as his forceful denunciation of social and economic injustice, have inspired leaders and citizens to become aware of inequalities. Furthermore, he has raised environmental awareness to an unprecedented level, urging the protection of our planet as our common home. There is a striking expectation that his successor will consolidate ideas and actions in this progressive direction.
Beyond his personal passion, Pope Francis has used soccer as a metaphor for life, highlighting values such as teamwork, effort, discipline, and respect for one's opponent. He has received numerous delegations from clubs and national teams, conveying messages about the importance of fair play and the social dimension of sport. His closeness to the world of soccer made him a unique figure, linking the spiritual realm with the popular passion for the sport.
